What is detention pay? Detention pay is when you arrive to a location to pick up a load and have to wait a time period before your truck is loaded. Detention pay is usually paid two hours after your arrival and the rate is usually $25 to $100 and hour after the initial two hours. When you arrive to pick up your load check to see if there is a wait time on your load and if so contact your broker immediately to inform of the wait so the clock starts soon after your arrival.
Get into a practice of making a small notation on the bill of lading, if permitted, of any wait time and request the shipper’s representative to initial or sign your notation to verify that you are waiting for the load.
Ask & negotiate with broker to see what is the rate for detention pay. Also inquiry when does detention pay start because it differ from broker to broker. When you are in detention status inquiry what form of proof that the broker require to verify that you are in detention.
